EU and India conclude landmark Free Trade Agreement

The European Union and India have concluded negotiations on a historic and highly ambitious Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the largest ever concluded by either partner. The agreement strengthens economic and political ties between the world’s second and fourth largest economies and signals a strong commitment to open, rules-based trade amid global geopolitical and economic challenges.

The FTA is expected to double EU goods exports to India by 2032 by eliminating or reducing tariffs on 96.6% of EU exports, generating annual savings of around €4 billion for European companies. It offers unprecedented market access to India’s rapidly growing economy, with major tariff cuts for industrial goods, agri-food products, and services, alongside strong protections for intellectual property.

The agreement also includes dedicated support for SMEs, safeguards for sensitive EU agricultural sectors, enhanced sustainability and climate commitments, and closer cooperation on climate action. The draft texts will now undergo legal review and ratification procedures on both sides before entering into force.
